Autism Awareness Month

Awareness. Another A-word.

As I said in my last post, all of us probably know someone who suffers from the "A"conditions I mentioned.

If you're like me, that knowing is a like dust bunnies under the bed.
I know they are there. I know I should sweep them up, and I know that one day I'll get around to it. It's not until move the bed across the floor and find a whole community of bunnies thriving in the detritus (really, where does that stuff come from?) that I KNOW the extent of the problem.

To that end, President Obama has proclaimed April 2, 2014, World Autism Awareness Day.  
"Americans Americans with autism contribute to all aspects of society and are an essential thread in the diverse tapestry of our Nation. On World Autism Awareness Day, we offer our support and respect to all those on the autism spectrum. "

 In fact, the Autism Society has been celebrating National Autism Awareness Month since the 1970s. The month of April has been set aside by the Autism Society to "educate the public about autism and issues within the autism community. " 
The power of one, if fearless and focused, 

is formidable, 
but the power of many working together is better.

What can I do, you ask? Well, with the help of www.autism-society.org I just happen to have a few answers.
  • The Autism Awareness Puzzle Ribbon is the most recognized symbol of the autism community in the world. Show your support for people with autism by "putting the puzzle" on your shirt, your car, or your FB page.
  • Contact your local, state and federal representatives and ask them to "Vote 4 Autism". For more information go to http://www.autism-society.org/get-involved/vote-4-autism/)
  •  Many Autism Society local affiliates* hold special events during the month of April. Check out what's happening in your neighborhood.
  •  Did you know that something that seems as simple as going to the movies is not an option for many families affected by autism? The Autism Society is working with AMC Theatres to bring special-needs families Sensory Friendly Films every month.
  • Share your experience/stories with NAAM or autism

A very dear friend of mine has a child, adult now, who has autism. She works so hard to make his life and hers a good one.

Holy Moly

I knew it had been quite some time since I'd posted anything here, but had no idea it had been since December. Where does the time go? Is there anyone out there still reading this blog.  I don't know what happened, but the words just quit coming. And maybe I got lazy. Misadventures of a Happy Heart A Memoir of Life Beyond Disabilities by Amy Quincy When E-books first came out, I was of the I'll-never-buy-one-because-I-like-the-feel-of-a-book-in-my-hand school of thought. Then I bought one. Then two. Then enough more to realize reading on a Nook was infinitely easier than holding a bound book and turning the pages, especially when reading in bed. Which is where I usually read. I also like the fact that I can make the font bigger to match my diminishing eye sight. I got a new pair of glasses last week and was amazed at how clear and bright the world looked through the new prescription. The saleswoman put a card with tee-tiny writing on it under my nose and I could read with no difficulty at all. Until I got home. Now I'm having to move my head either up or down depending on whether I'm looking far away or close up. Perhaps I should have saved the money I spent on new glasses and bought a larger Nook.
